10 out of 10 people die!

10 out of 10 people die!

It is the ultimate statistic. We will all die some day. Many people get out of paying taxes but everyone will face death. We plan for many things in our lives. We go to college to plan out our careers. We plan for our kids to go to college by saving our money up. We plan for our retirement by saving up money and paying off all of our debits. We plan vacations and other events. These are events that are short if we consider eternity.

Most people do not plan for eternity. Everyone has eternity written on their hearts. When people die we mourn because we know that death was not meant to be. We hear the sayings "you only live once" and "you can’t take it with you. The big question is what does happen when you die?

The Bible says "it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment." (Hebrews 9:27 ESV) The Bible tells us there will be a great judgment.  "Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.  And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.  Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.  And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:11-15)

When we stand before God he will judge our every thought word and deed. He has seen every one of our thoughts, words and deeds. There is nothing that we can hide from God. It is all written down and he already knows the intents of our hearts. Many think they will just explain to God and he will understand. God knows our hearts and that is the issue.

Others believe that they will be justified by the good deeds that they do. The Bible tells us that no man will be justified by the works of the law. (Galatians 2:16) All of our good deeds are seen as filthy rags to God. (Isaiah 64:6)

Many people think that they are not bad people. The issue is that they compare themselves against others. You might say well I am not as bad as Hitler. The problem with this thought process is that it is Jesus that will judge us against his standard and he has never ever sinned. Jesus never broke any of the 10 commandments. The commandments are not random they are based on the character and the nature of God.

Let's look at the 10 commandments:

"And God spoke all these words, saying,

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

1. “You shall have no other gods before me.

2. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

3. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

4. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,  but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.  For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

5. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

6. “You shall not murder."

7. “You shall not commit adultery."

8. “You shall not steal."

9. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

10. “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.” (Exodus 20:1-17)

If you judge yourself by this standard how will you do?

We have all sinned and fallen short. (Romans 3:23) We will all be guilty by the standard of the 10 commandments. You know it is wrong to lie, steal and murder. This law is written on your heart. Every person has a God given conscience.

God is a just God and so he must punish sin wherever it is found. (Romans 2:12)

Your name must be written in the book of life for you to not end up in the lake of fire. God is just but he is also merciful.

Imagine you are standing before a judge. He says you have to either pay a million dollar fine or go to prison. You do not have the money but you do not want to go to jail. Someone runs in and says I love you so much I will pay the fine for you.

Would you let a person pay your fine? Would that be good news for you? Some people are too proud to let another person pay their fine. You have to humble yourself to let another person pay your fine.

This is what Jesus did for you. God sent is son Jesus who is fully God and fully man. Jesus lived a perfect life and never broke any of the laws. He healed people and raised people from the dead. He allowed himself to die on the cross, not for anything he did but for the things that we did. Then 3 days later he rose from the grave. To get your name written in the book of life you have to repent and trust that Jesus died and rose from the grave. The Bible says that you must be born again. (John 3:3)

Have you been born again?

If you are a believer you will also be judged. "For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us will give an account of himself to God." (Romans 14:10-12) Your deeds will be judged. Have you done a good job of serving the king? This is not a salvation judgment. ”For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—  each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.  If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.  If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire." (1 Cor 3:11-15)

Christian how have you spent your time? Can you justify the work you have done?

Did you obey God? Did you obey the great commission to go and make disciples? (Matthew 28:18-20) You did turn from sin? (Romans 6:1-4) Did you control your tongue? (James 3:1-9) Each believer will give an account of their life.

We are called to be prepared to give an answer for the hope that we have. (1 Peter 3:15) We have the ministry of reconciliation. We are to be ambassadors for Christ.
