  • Sharing the Gospel

This month students went out and shared the Gospel.  Generally we go and share the gospel before Bible Study.  Here is a picture of B'jorn handing out tracts at Pitt.  He was very spirited in handing out tracts.  It is always so exciting to see students handing out tracts and being bold for the gospel.

Andre loves to have CCN Saturdays and share the gospel in his local town.  He is able to minister to many in his area each month.

People sometimes question why we hand out tracts however I see people reading them all the time.  Here is a student that was given a tract on a college campus reading a tract given to him a few minutes before.  We have been told by Christian college students that after we are there handing out tracts that they are able to get into gospel conversations with people talking about the tracts that were handed out.

CCN teaming with the local church to bring Good News to the snowy streets of New York City!  CCN loves the local church and supports it with outreaches, free training and new converts.

Ryan loves to handout tracts as well.  Below is Ryan giving tracts to the Mascots!

George attended the Super Bowl outreach and shared the gospel.  Many people were receptive to hear the good news.

Jen  attended the Super Bowl Outreach as well.   Jen was able to get lots of conversations by asking people to be on Witness Radio.  Here is a picture of Jen witnessing to one group of people at the Super Bowl.

Jen was also able to have many good conversations about the gospel with people open air.  Jen said "I love to do the good person test open air so that many people can hear the gospel.  I used pictures of famous people to draw a crowd and then take people through the good person test."   Here is Jen sharing the gospel with a group of people at the Super Bowl Outreach.

If you do not know what the good person test is then here is a general outline.

If you died today would you go to heaven or hell?  Here is a quick test.  Have you ever lied, stolen, lusted, hated or used God’s name in vain? Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” If you hate someone you have murdered them in your heart.  If you have done even one of these things, God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer and murder at heart, and the Bible warns that one day God will punish you in Hell.  Imagine if you were guilty and standing before a judge.  He said you either have to pay a million dollar fine or go to prison.  Someone that loves you runs into the courtroom and pays your fine.  You would be able to go free.  This is what Jesus did for you 2000 years ago.  You broke God’s Law and Jesus paid your fine. When Jesus died on the cross that was him taking the wrath of God in your place.  Imagine if your parent paid your fine in court.  They would tell you to never do that again.  That would be reasonable.  That is what Jesus tells us.  Repent, turn away from your sins.    Three days after Jesus died on the cross Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death.  Repent and trust Jesus, and God will remit your sins.   Then read the Bible daily and obey it. The only way to heaven is to repent and trust Jesus.

Jen spoke at a breakfast this past month about how to show evolution is not logical.  Everyone was encouraged learning how to disprove evolution.

    Thank you for your partnership.

  • 1 Billion Opportunites to Die

There is a cliché that says there are six million ways to die. Have you heard it? I’m not sure of the veracity of such a statement, but even if that were true, that doesn’t concern me as much as how many opportunities there are to die. Regardless of the innumerable ways a person can die, the more sobering thought that should grip us is that every second that passes, and approaches, was/is another opportunity to pass away. Let me put this into perspective in a couple of ways.

If you drive, how many intersections do you cross while you drive? Ever counted? Have you ever thought about a drunk driver, a phone texter, or just a person not paying attention, running that red light, slamming into you, and killing you? Every intersection is another probability for that.

How about this. You are at work, at home, or anywhere else, and you have a brain aneurism, or a heart attack, or some other bodily organ fail on you, which costs you your life. Have you ever wondered how something like that can hit, literally, at any second? With six millionish ways to die, the probabilities that something outside of you, or inside of you, can take you out is absolutely flooring when you think about that reality.  But, once again, the ways you can die is not as frightening as to how often that opportunity presents itself. Here is another perspective that I hope will rock your thinking. Since I am going to die at any time (whenever my time comes), I am going to use the smallest, most comprehensible measurement of time to show you how many opportunities I have personally had to die – the second.

There are 60 seconds in a minute. Multiply 60 seconds by 60 minutes and you have 3,600 seconds in an hour. Multiply 3,600 by 24 hours and you get 86,400 seconds in a day. Now, multiply 86,400 by 365.24 days in a year, and you end up with 31,556,736 seconds in a year. Finally, I am 32 years old to date (not counting the days that have passed since my birthday), which means that since my birth, I have had 1,009,815,552+ opportunities in my lifetime to die! And let’s not forget the fact that I could have died in the womb, either by abortion or miscarriage.

When you think about this number, I have soared well above 1 billion in opportunities to expire from the Earth. With all the different ways I could die and all the opportunities that will make that a reality, it is truly a miracle I am still alive! And that is the point I am trying to make. The only reason why any of us are alive for any amount of time on this Earth is simply by the grace of God. Not only because life in and of itself is a precious miracle that can only come about by the mighty and creative power of God, but also because the Bible says that we deserve death because we are sinful at conception.

    Psalm 51:5 says,
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.”

Romans 5:12 also points out, Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned…”

The fact that we die is a testimony to our sinful nature. To make matters worse, as we grow old, the Bible teaches us that we choose sin over God because of our nature, and do not desire to please Him (John 3:19; Romans 3:12), thus is the reason why His wrath abides on us (Ephesians 5:6). Nevertheless, just reading this is a testimony to the graciousness of God upon you in that you have not yet died.

Moses prays to God in asking Him in Psalm 90:12 to “teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. In essence, we are to contemplate the short amount of time we have on the Earth so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. The Bible teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10), and that in departing from sin we gain understanding (Job 28:28). In order for us to realize the truth concerning how frail we are, and how susceptible we are to die at any second, it is important that we contemplate death and how imminent it really is. More than that, we must contemplate death in relationship to what God says about it. Not our Grandparents or parents, or our friends, co-workers, or mentors. And not Islam, Buddhism, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, or Atheism, but God’s Word (all 66 books of the Bible).

The bad news is that many of you who will read this will decide to reject the gift of everlasting life presented to you by Christ through the gospel.  Many will take every breath given to them by God and will continue to life every second as they please without regard for the One who gave them life. It doesn’t matter what sin it is, God must judge those that break His laws.

The good news is that Jesus Christ died in our place, took our sin upon Himself, endured the wrath of God, and rose from the dead, defeating death, making a way from those who repent and believe to be saved. Even though we will die one day, the fact that Christ rose from the dead tells us there is a resurrection coming! Some will rise to everlasting life, others to everlasting condemnation (John 5:29). If you trust Him to save you from your sin, He will change your nature and give you a new heart with new desires. You will no longer desire to live in sin, but will want to love and obey Him because of Who He is!

Every second that ticks away is another second you can never get back. Every second approaching is another opportunity to die and meet your Maker. After that, eternity awaits you. Don’t waste any more time! Thrust yourself at the feet of Jesus and cry out for mercy because your sins against Him. He is gracious, and will forgive you if you are humble and broken. Trust in him while you are still given a second to do so. One day, that will not be the case.

  • Human Language Impossible if Darwinian-Evolution is True

Imagine a room that holds a giant brute force computer that does not know a lick of the world’s languages. On one side of the computer, there is slot labeled, “Input.” On the other side, there is a slot labeled “output.” Now suppose you fed a string of symbols in the input side and out comes “Language X” from the output side. What do you think it would take for the computer to accomplish an extraordinary feet as that? Could it be mindless chance, or pre-programmed intelligence that is a factor?

The symbols on the page you are reading are letters strung together in order to depict ideas and information. The fact that you are reading multiple symbols right now, and at possibly a high rate, illustrates the input portion of your mind. However, what do you think it would take for your brain to take the letters on this page, and retype it in Spanish? It would be quite an effort! What kind of intelligence do you think it would take to translate what you hear in English and say in Chinese, Spanish, or Afrikaans? Once again, the miracle is too great to describe. In order for you to grasp just how much of a miracle it is for human beings to produce, understand, interpret, etc., language, it is best, first, to describe the tragedy of the evolutionary theory in describing how humans speak in the first place, then, to reveal what exactly it would take for human language to evolve.

Sadly, the Darwinian-evolutionary theory accounts for much in the world through a series of random processes and biological “transitions.” Even worse, the unique ability (and should I say the strictly human ability) of language is too often drug through that philosophical mud. Much of the linguists today, although the data they procure would prove the contrary, believe that at some point in history humans developed the capacity (and some would dare say “miracle”) of language. Some say we acquired language with input from our environment and through gradual physiological changes. Others have said we are born with the innate capacity. Also, there are some who believe that we can produce outputs “mindlessly” like the computer above without any conscious knowledge of a language. Either way, the travesty is that although the data of modern linguistics screams “Creator!” many would rather mock God by choosing to believe chance and natural selection as their father which endowed us all with our linguistic gifts. Space does to permit me to dive into the ocean of inconsistencies associated with Darwinian-evolution and linguistic data, but perhaps a mathematical argument would be sufficient.

Dr. John W. Oller Jr., linguist and author of, “Languages and Genes: Can They Be Built Up through Random Change and Natural Selection?” presents in a scholastic journal why “Neo-Darwinism” cannot, through mathematical and logical proofs, account for human genomes (genetic molecule of DNA) and language by “chance arrangements” (Oller, 2002, p. 26). To get to the point fairly quickly, he uses the computer room analogy above (also known as the Chinese Room experiment) to reveal the mathematical impossibility of language to evolve as Darwinists propose. In order to get the mathematical point (which I think will pour a mountain of “God is awesome” on your head) I must paste a paragraph that he wrote, because it is important in order to understand the equation. He states:

“…suppose the language [input to the computer] is English and that the person outside the box asks the computer to please count the characters in this sentence, excluding spaces and other marks of punctuation, and then repeat them up to the 100th letter. Suppose that the computer inside the box can receive inputs in a typed format and can associate them with other inputs in a typed format. What are the chances that the computer would be able (without ever consulting anyone who knows English, for that would be cheating) to generate the desired response? How long would an observer have to wait for the appropriate response to emerge from the output slot?” (p. 35)

Here is where it gets fun. A person who speaks English finds the challenge to produce the first sentence fairly simple and has a 3.14 x 10^141(power) chance in getting the answer right. In other words, it is 1 chance in 314 with 141 zeros behind it! You can do the math I’m sure. Now, in order to put the odds in Darwinian-evolution’s favor, Oller imagined now 3 billion computers inside that box in the room because that is the approximate amount of base pairs in our human genome. So now evolution has 3 billion computers working for it to be able to repeat the process that a human can do. If the computer were set to produce RANDOM sequences of 100 letters every thousandth of a second for 4.5 billion years (because that has been one of the estimated ages for Earth), just to reproduce the first sentence would take 7.36 x 10^110(power) tries! That is 736 with 110 zeros behind it! In other words, according to Oller, it would take MORE than 4.5 billion years in order for the computers to generate the desired sentence just ONCE on average (Oller, 2002, p. 36). In my own words, in order to get 3 billion computers to do what we can do on a daily basis is not only against the essential assumptions of a slow gradual process, but time wise, it is impossible! Add to the problem of multiple languages in world, and non-verbal communication, and the various other areas of linguistics. The miracle, however, is that we can do all this at a miraculous rate! I can see why some linguists would call language a miracle. It’s too bad the glory for that miracle is not given rightly to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Creator.

So how could we use this knowledge in evangelism? Good question. It depends on who you are talking to, but here are the basic things you need to remember: 1. Dr. John Oller is the name of the linguist. 2. Just like biological science, linguists who believe in evolution make huge assumptions. If any person suggest that they can prove how language could have evolved, the best question is “What data do you have to affirm that? 3. Memorize the numbers above. A human has 1 chance in 314 with 141 zeros behind it to produce the first sentence above. It would hypothetically take 3 billion computers 1 chance in 736 and 110 zeros behind it to do what we do once and that is with producing 100 letters every thousandth of a second at random for MORE than 4.5 billion years. But humans do it repeatedly! 4. We already possess the DNA and genetic endowment to produce language. Not only would scientist have to provide some kind of data to show how DNA came into existence, but they would have to reveal how that data contained the information necessary for us to produce language. 5. Along with #4, we haven’t even scratched the surface when it comes to explaining abstract concepts like meaning, philosophy, morals, etc., which we use language to describe. Even the very subject we are dealing with now would be moot if it were not for the phenomenon of language. In so little words, language truly proves that we are created beings made by the power of an all-powerful, and infinitely complex Creator.

There is more to this, but if you don’t get to use any of this information in a witnessing encounter, just remember this: the ability to speak and produce language is a miracle of God. In the beginning, God spoke (Gen. 1:1). When man was formed, the same breath that spoke the universe into existence breathed life into our lungs (Gen. 2:27). Then, when Adam took his first breath, it is no doubt that he was able to utilize language with a fully functional capacity, or else how would he understand God, or name the animals (Gen. 2:16-20)? But none of this compares to the living Word who was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1). Who bore our shame and carried our sorrows (Isa. 53:4); who cried out, “It is Finished!” for the punishment of sin. Who, when He rose again, defeated sin and death. And when we repent and put our faith in Him, He speaks once again into our darkened and sinful hearts and regenerates us anew (2 Cor. 4:6). Now, we are commanded to go to the nations, if we are Christians, and speak to them about this glorious gospel (Matt. 28:19-20). The gift of language is truly miraculous, but not as miraculous as being born again and having the Holy Spirit enabling us to proclaim this glorious gospel to the nations. I pray that the wonder of language fascinates you and causes you to worship your Creator and God more affectionately with your tongue!
