Jesus is God

When dealing with many different religions the issue of who is Jesus comes up often.  JW’s, Mormons and Muslims all say that Jesus is not God.  We need to be able to show that Jesus is God from the scriptures.

The best way to answer would be to give the answer that Jesus gives.

Look at John 10:24-42  (NASB)

24 The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp.”

The Jewish people ask Jesus if he is the Christ.  Jesus says ” told you but you did not believe” me.  He explains that if they were his they would believe.  In verse 33 Jesus asks then why they want to stone him and they say that he is saying that he is God.

The Jewish people understand that Jesus is calling Himself God and that is why they want to stone Him.

We can see a similar situation in earlier in John 8:58-59 (NASB)

“58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.”

Here again Jesus is claiming to be God and the Jews realize this and they want to stone him.  When Moses asks God who he should say sent him to save the people God tells him.  Tell them “I Am” sent you.  Exodus 3:14 is a place that shows God referring to Himself as “I AM”  The Jewish people would have known the reference.   They want to stone him because they know that he is claiming to be God.

In Luke 5 12-26

“12 While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He ordered him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 15 But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.

17 One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” 22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” 25 Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 26 They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Again here you can see that Jesus knows they are thinking that only God can forgive sin. He shows them that he is God by healing the man and showing that he has the power to forgive sin.  Jesus is claiming to be God and the people know it.

In John 20:28 Thomas worships Jesus and says “My Lord and my God.”  If you look at every place where a person tries to worship an angel, the angel tells the person not to worship them.  But if you look at the verses that follow John 20:28 you can see that Jesus does not correct him in his worship.  It is because Jesus is God.

There are verses that are obvious that you can look at to see that Jesus is God.

In Acts 10:36 (NASB) It is obvious that Jesus is Lord of all.

“36 The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)— “

 Philippians 2:9-11 (NASB)

“For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

You can also see that Jesus is God by looking at the attributes that Jesus has that are attributes that only God would have.
